Hyatt Regency Baltimore

Be a part of the eighth annual ADSA Foundation Auction on July 26, 2000 during the ADSA-ASAS Joint Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland.

About the ADSA Foundation Auction

The American Dairy Science Association Foundation held the first Foundation Auction in 1993 during the ADSA Annual Meeting at the University of Maryland, College Park. The auction generates thousands of dollars each year which supports the programs of the Foundation, contributes to the betterment of the industry, and helps the association achieve its overall goals.

Who can participate? Participation is open to everyone, regardless of whether you are an ADSA member. You can help the Foundation by donating items to the auction and/or by bidding on items during the auction.

Why donate an item? The 1999 Foundation Auction generated a record $14,187.00 with the sale of the 67 items donated. Proceeds from the Foundation Auction create and maintain such quality programs as the Foundation Scholar awards, the Genevieve Christen Distinguished Undergraduate Student Award, and high quality programs at our annual meeting. Plus, you may enjoy a tax deduction for your donation.  Consult your tax advisor for specific details.*

Here's how it works. Decide on an item that you would like to donate.  Then complete the accompanying Auction Item Donation Form and send it to ADSA Headquarters. You'll be notified later when and where to send the item. A listing of auction items will be posted on the ADSA Web site, included in the annual meeting program and distributed to all meeting registrants. Each registrant (approximately 3,000 people) will receive a catalog containing a brief description of each item, who donated the item, and its estimated value.

Auction items will be on display at the meeting from Sunday, July 23 through the end of the day on Wednesday, July 26.  On Wednesday evening immediately following the awards ceremony, attendees will be treated to ice cream and all the fixings.  The auction will begin with a single rap of the gavel. Excitement will be high and bids will fly as item after item goes on the auction block!

Tips for donating an exciting auction package.  An exciting auction package will generate more interest in your item and will help the Foundation raise more funds to support its mission. We have included some tips to help you create the kind of package that meeting-goers want to bid on. For suggestions, see back cover.

w Make your package unique. Unusual items such as antiques or memorabilia related to the industry generate more interest and discussion, and higher bids.

w Describe your item completely. Inclusion of details such as item amenities or historical information make the package much more attractive.

w Remember to include any limitations on the package. People will be happier with the package if they already know the fine print.

We kindly request that items donated by individuals have a value of $50 or more, and items from companies have a value of $100 or more.

Deadline for donating: April 1, 2000. All donated items received by April 1 will be listed in the final auction catalog. Of course, the earlier we receive confirmation of your donation, the more promotion your item will receive, so don’t delay. Return your application today!

Simply complete the accompanying application and return it to ADSA Headquarters by April 1, 2000. If you have any questions, contact Molly Kelley at kelleymt@aol.com or call ADSA Headquarters, 217/356-3182.

How do I bid on an auction item? Review the items listed in the catalog and select those on which you would like to bid. Then visit the auction tables at the annual meeting in Baltimore starting on Sunday, July 23 to locate your items.

If items you have chosen are on the Silent Auction, write your name on the silent bid sheet along with your bid amount. Silent Auction bidding will begin at the start of Registration on Sunday and continue through the close of the Live Auction on Wednesday evening. You may place as many bids as you like before the Silent Auction closes.

If the items you have chosen are on the Live Auction, be sure to attend the Live Auction on Wednesday evening. When the auctioneers put your item on the block, be ready to yell out your bid!

How do I know if I’ve won? All bid winners will be announced after the auction on Wednesday evening.

How do I claim my items? All items must be claimed and paid for at the end of the Live Auction Wednesday night.
